Article by Patrik Richardson

Many women have to deal with, sometimes extreme, hair loss during or after pregnancy. This can be a annoting problem, especially when the hair gets very thin. What can you do about hair loss? In this article you can read more about it.

Hair fallThe shower drain gets clogged with it and the pillow is full of it: hair. Many women have to deal with hair loss during or after childbirth. In many cases, it stops the naturally, but sometimes the hair fall can be very extreme.

Hair loss is caused by a change in the hormones of women. Hormones have a lot of influence on the condition of the hair (for example, or the condition of the nails). For example, many women complain about their hair during menstruation: it is not good, it feels dry and looks dull. Although some women may exaggerate slightly, it is true that the hair of women during menstruation may vary or feel different. In situations of stress or (over) fatigue, the hair of a women also suffer.

While hair fall is a common incident, hair loss during and after pregnancy is slightly different. Women who lose a lot of hair during pregnancy, sometimes not even realize that their body is changing. Unnoticed, stress and tension can be the cahse of hair fall. Hair loss after pregnancy (often several months after birth) occurs in many women. Male hormones (androgens)  cause a severe disruption in the order of the hair follicles which causes the hair to start falling. This is actually a very natural process as pregnant women often have a more hair.

So… what is normal? An average woman loses daily about 80-100 hairs. These hairs disappear (unseen) in the shower drain, the vacuum cleaner or brush. Losing hair is very common, and is part of the hair cycle. In places where the hair disappears, a new one is grown automaticcaly. Most women have about 400,000 to 1,000,000 hairs, and a loss of 80-100 hairs a day is nothing to worry about.

But it is a different story when one’s hair fall out simultaneously with big amounts. In particular, women who are pregnant can find this very disturbing and. In many cases this is not much of a problem, eventually the hair will grow back. You just need a little patience. After having a baby it can take months till the hair is restored, and sometimes the hair remains slightly thinner.

Unlike men, women lose their hair all around the head. There may occur some locally empty spots, but generally this won’t happen. Extreme hair loss can be experienced as very annoying by women. The hair is something important for many women and it’s not fun to lose. There is only extreme hair when bald spots occur on the scalp. Many women mostly feel this by themselves when the limit of ‘normal hair’ has passed.

What I’ve to do now?Anyone who feels unconfortable about the loss of (large quantities) hair, has to consult a doctor. He will probally take blood to check your hormones. If the test shows that the hormones are out of balance (due to the pregnancy) the doctor will advice medication or decide to do nothing for safety reasons for the baby.

After pregnancy, women can sometimes have hair loss for more than one year after the birth, but if no bald spots occur, it is wise just to be patient. Healthy eating can help the hair become stronger, shinier and fuller. Here a number of products that can help you to improve it:

Fruit: melon, berries, apples and oranges Leaf vegetables: spinach, lettuce and endive Dairy: milk, cheese and eggs Meats and substitutes: chicken, nuts and fish Water

The quality of the hair can also be improved by taking vitamins. Here are some vitamins that can help:

Vitamin A Vitamin C Proteins Iron Folic acid Vitamin B-6 and B-12

These are all general foods which you can find in your local general store. Hair fall should be taken seriously, and ask advice at your doctor, especially when you are pregnant to keep you and the baby healthy.
